Elevation: 24,000+ metres

Hours to complete: 110

Mental Health problems have touched his family personally and he has first hand experience of the vital work that Middlesbrough and Stockton Mind do for the people in Teesside.

The Two Volcano Sprint is a single-stage, unsupported bicycle challenge starting and finishing at south Italy’s two iconic volcanoes, Mt. Vesuvio and Mt. Etna. With just over 1000+ kilometers and 24,000+ meters of elevation gain, the 2VS is a challenge for even the strongest of cyclists.

Derek, an ex SAS soldier and who is now living and working in Dubai says, ‘I started my ultra-cycling adventure at the beginning of the year after months of deliberation.  My dreams of racing around the world were interrupted with races being postponed or cancelled due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. I wanted to use my training and passion for cycling for a meaningful cause, and to prove that anything is possible if you are willing to work for it’.

Derek who is funding all of his own travel and race costs himself hopes to raise over £2000 which will provide at least 3 people with 3 months of 1:1 counselling sessions to support with anxiety and/or depression.

We were thrilled when Derek told us about his plans for Fundraising. Derek is a local guy who has really made something of himself despite his own personal struggles in life. He is a true inspiration for the men in Teesside and we are so proud to have him as our first ever Ambassador for the charityLorna, Fundraising Officer for Middlesbrough and Stockton Mind.

We will be updating our supporters on Derek’s incredible challenge over the next few weeks via our social media channels. You can follow his journey via our website and his Just Giving page or via social media:
